Filters are a powerful tool you should master to maximize your experience with ELVocab.

Understanding Filters

While Learning ELVocab, you’ll see two sets of filters on both sides of your screen.

Left-Side Filters: Knowledge Levels

On the left side, you’ll find level filters. These allow you to filter words based on your knowledge level. You can hide words you already know and focus solely on new vocabulary. This personalized approach helps you target areas where you need improvement.

Right-Side Filters: Grammar and Structure.

On the right side, you have default filters, including Noun, Verb, Adjective, Masculine, and Feminine. These filters help you categorize words based on their grammatical function and gender. To use these filters, click once to apply, click again to invert, and click a third time to reset. You can apply multiple filters simultaneously, creating an “And” effect that combines all selected filters.

Custom Filters

You’re not limited to default filters. You can create custom filters using the top bar, applying them to words in your target language, the translation, or both. This customization ensures you can tailor your learning to your specific needs.

Advanced Matching Techniques

By default, filters match words at the beginning, middle, or end. However, you can refine your searches further:

  • Use quotation marks (“”) to match exact words or phrases.
  • Match any single letter with a period (.) For instance, searching for “c.t” will match words like “cat” and “cut”.
  • Use square brackets [abc] to match any of the specified letters. For example, searching for “c[aou]t” will match words like “cat”, “cot”, and “cut”.

Using ?, +, and * for Pattern Matching

  • Search for “colou?r”: This will match both “color” and “colour” (optional match).
  • Search for “go+gle”: This will match “gogle”, “google”, “gooogle”, and so on (one or more occurrences).
  • Search for “ab*c”: This will match “ac”, “abc”, “abbc”, “abbbc”, and so on (zero or more occurrences).

Filter By Length

You can also filter words by their length using numbers. For example, write3to match words with exactly 3 letters, or 4-6 to match words that are between 4 and 6 letters long. This customization ensures you can tailor your learning to your specific needs.

By mastering these filter techniques, you can significantly enhance your vocabulary learning efficiency with ELVocab.
